What I Learned in College

So I’m done! I am an official college graduate. I know, I already took the picture with the diploma… but now I’m REALLY done. As in I’ve taken the last final of my undergrad. They say you learn a lot of stuff in college, and as I was walking out of the health professions building for the last time I began thinking to myself…what did I learn in college? Here are just a few of the thoughts that came to my head on the drive home.

Some stuff I learned in college:

  • I can do hard things.
  • You are going to be wrong, a lot.  Take it with grace.
  • Being offended is exhausting.
  • You create your own reality.
  • Attitude is a choice.
  • Just do the work. Be the worker ant.
  • Life involves a lot of re-learning. Humans are forgetful. Sometimes we forget things we once knew to be true.
  • Always question the source.
  • Seeking meaning is healthier for you than avoiding discomfort.
  • I am the only me there will ever be.
  • Connecting with other people enriches life, so make connections.
  • Sometimes, it’s okay to agree to disagree.
  • Everyone does not have to like you.
  • Everyone has faults and insecurities. Everyone.
  • Accept that you have weaknesses.
  • It’s okay to ask for help.
  • Accept responsibility for your wrong doings.
  • Commit to do better.
  • I don’t want to become stale and stuck in my ways. I never want to stop learning.
  • Learning is an unending process.

One of the most valuable things I have taken away from this is a love of learning, and a realization of how much more there is to learn. Whether it be formal education, understanding and nurturing relationships, life experience, or spiritual growth, I never want to stop learning. The more experience I gain the more I realize we are being continually molded and shaped by our Heavenly Father through the things we learn in this life.

It's a bitter sweet feeling. It's going to be SO weird come August when Garrett goes back to school. No more late night studying together, maybe I'll pick up a few good books! Ideas?
